Most of this is because the Bush administration (for reasons known
only to it) redefined how the poverty line was drawn in such a
manner that the figures went up.. If you used the old yardstick
poverty is pretty much where it has been for years.

This has been an ongoing source of concern to me, too. Some think
that since it has been going down as a % GDP this ain't so bad. I
would tend to disagree, especially with the unfunded liability that
is Social Security.
