Hi Harry,
I know I'm in the minority, but I tend to take a lot of cash with me.
Once in my stateroom, it all gets stored in the safe, so I'm not that
concerned about theft or loss. Each day, I take out what I'll need for
port, and each evening, I take out what I'll need for the casino. In
port, I find paying with cash gives you the best edge for negotiations
on price, when you're shopping for goodies to take home. For
high-ticket items, I'll use a credit card, but I'm rarely shopping for
anything that significant. US dollars seem to be the universal language
in the Caribbean (at least in the frequently visited cruise ship
ports). For me, it's just a lot easier to deal with cash than cashing
travellers checks every few days. And, while on board ship, you can
pretty much go cashless, using your sign/sail card. I leave my onboard
expenses on the credit card, for convenience.
