Re: Tipping first? Posted on: Fri, 30 Dec 2005 18:57:10 -0500

After I wrote this post, I searched Google and found a lot of old comments
on tipping. I didn't mean to start up an old controversy.

This will be my 10th cruise, but my first on Celeb. I have always waited
till the end, and have seen all kinds of shenannigans with the tipping. We
also usually try to get to know our servers if possible during their "off"
times, (do they really have any?) and love meeting them. Anyway, I just was
thinking that it must be nerve wracking to work hard all week to wonder
whether you'll encounter the folk at the end that skip dinner on the last
night to avoid tipping, proclaim loudly as I have heard that the cruiselines
need to pay their help more, it's not the passengers' problem, etc. I have
met 2 different couples from Canada (this just HAS to be a coincidence, it
can't be a custom, can it?) that said that the don't believe in tipping?

Of course, to be honest, I do have a selfish motive, and that is to make
sure the server whoever it is knows that we are worth the work they are
doing, because we are tippers. (Is this bad?)

I know in general, in America, it might be insulting, but I actually thought
it might be nice to pay them the standard tip up front, and then give them
something extra for exceptional service at the end if warranted. That way
they would know that we at least were not going to stiff them. Of course
there is a chance that we wouldn't get good service, but it seems that these
folks provide a lot of service and I guess I'm not all that picky.

BUT, perhaps this is less of a problem that I think?

Anyway, just my thoughts.
