If you're reasonably comfortable dealing with public transport, and not
burdened with an excess of luggage, there are trains leaving Rome's
central station (Termini) every half hour or so, at a cost of maybe $10
for 2 people. Add fares for short taxi rides at each end, and you're up
to about $30-$40 tops. Much less than the fares you've been quoted of
about $150 for taxi or private car.
