Re: Another one falls off a cruise ship Posted on: Sat, 28 Jan 2006 09:55:48 -0500

After reading this, I realized I had sent this reply straight to George L.
yesterday instead of posting it.

What I would do If a Passenger was reported Missing.

First thing, I make an announcement on the ships PA system for Mr. so and so
call extension xxx, report to Pursers desk, or present themselves to any
uniformed officer, there is an "urgent message". I would note the time,
specific location of ship, and the person making the report. (And their
condition, etc. unbeknown to the person reporting).

If the person did not "report in" within say 5 or 10 minutes, I think I
would have to stop the ship, and at least conduct a beginning investigation
to determine the facts of the disappearance to see if you were at least
close enough to attempt to retrace and attempt a rescue, and report to the
closest Coast Guard type authorities. After I had done all you could to
ascertain that there was nothing you could do at that moment to effect a
rescue, I would resume course.

After that, who knows, but at least it is better than doing nothing! What
if your teen went over--BTW...if someone reports SEEING someone go over the
ship should IMMEDIATELY stop, no matter how doubtful the account. The
inconvenience of 2500 is still a lot better than the life of 1, if there is
any chance.

Okay, now I've started the game. Jump in every one. Thanks George.
