Jim, I just gave two examples widely separated by date. They are not the
only instances.
To me, someone promoting his website by posting press releases there is no
different than someone promoting their website by posting invitations for
people to visit and sign up for a newsletter. If you think one is wrong,
then both have to be wrong and it doesn't matter how many times it is done.
It is either right or wrong.
FWIW, I don't really care one way or another. I like Ray and while I don't
always agree with him, I don't think what he is doing is SPAM. From the
reputation he has here, it seems like the majority of people aren't bothered
by his press releases either... and I have to admit that there have been
times that I have used his website to find a press release that I either
missed or trashed and wished I hadn't.
As for Motter... he is a lightweight. He seldom participates here except to
promote his website and often his information is wrong or misleading. I
have to admit a certain amount of guilty pleasure in tweaking him when he is
wrong just to see his reaction. I know I shouldn't do that and I am working
on being a better person.... sometimes with limited success
And.... one of the few things I have learned about USENET in general and
this newsgroup in particular is that it really doesn't matter. So what if
Ray posts press releases and archives them at his website? If this were so
terrible people would rise up in righteous indignation and hound him out of
here. It hasn't happened in the 12 years that r.t.c. has been open for
business and it isn't going to happen. So what if Motter shills his
newsletter here? CruiseMates is a popular cruise website in spite of Paul
Motter... not because of him. Whatever he does here isn't going to amount
to a hill of beans anyway.
Maybe I am getting old... and mellowing in my old age... but none of this
stuff seems to be very important to me any more. Oh, once in a while
something will set me off on a rant or a short lived crusade... but I am
much better at ignoring this stuff than I used to be.
