My mom had a metal cane which was jointed so it could be folded up
into a small package. (This was before 9-11. I don't know what
issues there would be with airport security now for that cane) When
we were 'attacked' by gypsies trying to sell us tablecloths in
Segovia, she marched down the center of the street swinging the cane
in an arc around her saying No NO NO. They stayed outside of the arc
of swing. A girl with us had her gold card pick-pocketed, but we were
fine.
