The CD and his/her staff are responsible for most of the onboard
entertainment and activities. If I'm not mistaken, the CD is the
liaison between the guest entertainment and the cruise line -
basicallly the go-to person for the guest performers on board. I think,
on some lines, the CD is the one that talks about shopping and
excursions, but I know that some lines have specific people for these
jobs. HAL has a "shopping ambassador" who does the port talks. The CD
is also the one who does the disembarkation talk (still have never made
it to one of those and have always been successful in disembarking the
ship...go figure). MC-ing the shows, Bingo, Trivia, Pool Games, Evening
"Game Shows" - all the responsibility of the CD and staff. No CD has
ever made an impression enough for me to actually remember his/her
name. I view him as the guy with the poor stage presence and corny
jokes that I have to endure before the show starts. Some people spend a
lot more time on their cruises participating in what the CD and staff
have planned for them. I'd probably notice very little difference in my
cruise experience if the CD and staff weren't there at all. I know a
lot of cruisers enjoy interracting with the CD and staff...just not my
thing.
