thing, but I guess you're right that next we need to use a proper travel
agent.

As people have pointed out, that's what a travel agent would have told
you. I've only used internet travel agents, and found out all the
information myself or from this newsgroup. So it is possible to do
that, but I knew when I booked my first cruise what the tipping system
was and how they enforced it. The $100 deposit is so that you don't
stiff the workers. If you want NOT to tip, you can do it, but they
make you work extra to do that.

We gave our cabin steward and extra cash tip last time. I'm not sure
whether you can do the same with room service or not since we never
used it.
If we took a tour (either from the ship or on our own), we tipped the
guides in cash if (as you said) we felt that they earned it just as we
would here. Or rather - if they didn't tell us much or told us things
that were incorrect or lied to us about things such as how long it
would take us to get back to the ship - then we didn't tip at all.
And of course on shore if you buy anything, you pay in cash or by
credit card.
