My family has carried FRS (Family Radio Service) handheld radios for a
decade or more - in the mountains, desert, Mexico, amusement parks,
zoos, hiking, etc. etc. We even use them when driving in a caravan. I
give them to employees for trade shows. They're wonderful! On our first
cruise in a long while (last Feb), we took a pair. That enabled my wife
and I to comfortably go our own way ashore, linking up when we chose...

FRS radios are often advertised as loss-leaders for $10-20 per pair, and
sometimes free after rebate. We have about 3-4 pair laying around and
they all work together on the same frequencies. Some are more complex
than others, but all work for up to a mile or so depending on the
environment.
