There are basically two types of Radio Service on the market that you should
be aware of: FRS (Family Radio Service) and GMRS (General Mobile Radio
Service).
FRS does not require a license but is limited in its range and power (1/2
watt). GMRS has more range and power along with more channels but requires
a license. While they say this I don't know of too many people applying for
the license because enforcement is virtually non existent. Also, GMRS
radios have some of the same channels as FRS.
If it were me I would find a set of GMRS radios with an 8-12 mile range
along with a cradle charger. If the radios use AA instead of AAA so much
the better.
Both radio services have privacy channels which means other parties can hear
you but unless they are using the same privacy channel then you can't hear
them. Most radios have 38 privacy settings while I've seen some with 99.
We used our radios on our last cruise. They first time cruising couple with
us said they don't know how they would have managed without the radios. I
can see where they would be very handy in an emergency situation.
Good luck.
