You can bring OTC meds if they are essential, just get a note from
your doctor. Of coursee it depends on who does the screening, but if
you lost a bottle of Robitussin it wouldn't be that bad.

There are some diabetics who must eat at certain times, but they can
bring food as long as it isn't liquid or gel like. There are many
things I pack for DH, type 2, that I can still pack. On the planes
they always have water, coffee, diet soda etc.
Flying now can be a hassle, but if you know what you can/can't take,
you can work around it. If it reaches the point that I can't take my
cell phone/camera etc on the plane, I will just ship them ahead of
time. I would not put expensive electronics in my checked luggage.
