I live in a condo with gang boxes, we just replaced them with nifty
modern ones and there's a dedicated "Outgoing mail" slot now...very
handy. We used to put stuff in our boxes with a little flag in the
back of the box (visible to the carrier when she/he had the back open)
but the stuff was very often left behind, even when I jammed it in
upright with the outgoing address and stamp facing that side so they
had to shove the outgoing mail back into the box..grumble)

Gang boxes are becoming very common even in detached housing
areas...my mother-in-law lives in one and the group box is about a
quarter block away, up to two blocks for some owners. I know it's
easier for the P.O. but one of the things I looked forward to was
having my very own mail box on my porch so I wouldn't have to hike out
int he rain and snow to get the mail and the possibility of having to
hike a block or so just annoys me.
