Actually, the curbside boxes at the post office are picked up after closing.
It is the surest way to make sure your mail will go out on the weekend. The
box must be cleared at PO closing, then later the driver going to the mail
processing center clears the mail. So, mail in those boxes are typically
assured of getting processed even when the PO lobbies are closed.

The collection boxes are mainly being removed because of vandalism, not
terrorism. The vandalism for personal information and checks are a big
problem with these boxes.

The cluster boxes at apartments and other areas are the way of the
future....mainly as a cost reduction (& decreased pay for the carriers).
Another reason for the collection boxes being removed is revenue, as well.
If those outside locations do not perform well, it decreases route time to
service those boxes (and decreases the potential for vandalism of the boxes
as well).
