Jamaica is a VERY popular stop for lots of cruise ships. As far as
crime goes, it happens everywhere. I have been to Jamaica a total of
only fifteen days and never had anything negative happen to me. Sure
ganja was offered, but a polite waive of the hand and they leave.
However, I have only spent three days in New York City and had a bag
snatched. Should I avoid the US based on that experience?
Read to the end of the article that you linked to. It is suspected that
the killing was DRUG RELATED!! If you are one of those that goes to
Jamaica for the drugs, then you are inviting problems because you are
dealing with the criminal element anyway.
Now, all that said, there are a LOT of people that will stay on the ship
just because they don't like being around poor black people. THEY are
the ones that are making a biggest deal of the potential danger in an
effort to hide their bigoted views. If you are one of those, stay on the
boat. But if not, then get off and discover the beauties of the country
and the hospitality of the people.
Just my $.02
