I think you're confusing an ocean liner with a cruise ship. Until the
1950s when trans-Atlantic flights became reasonably routine for
passengers, ship travel was just as much a form of necessary
transportation for first class passengers as for steerage passengers.
Whether some passengers traveled in luxury and wore tuxedos and long
gowns at dinner, doesn't diminish the fact that it was necessary
transportation for decades and decades.
