Type in Oyster Cards on Google and read all about them.

They sound pretty good. TFL guarantee that they are cheaper than any
other kind of ticket. 3 pounds deposit to start, plus an amount for
travel, 10, 20 or 40 pounds.

You get a refund when done with it. The 3 pounds deposit is returned
plus any travel credits left on the card.

I have not used them myself, but plan to do so next month when visiting
friends.
