I would definitely come down a day (or more) early. Arriving in Los
Angeles on the day of your cruise and then trying to make it to the
port can add an excitement you really don't need. The last couple of
miles of the journey can be really exciting as several thousand people
struggle to get to the ship(s). I've seen people leave their vehicles
and hike the last mile or so - not recommended.
Your ship is leaving from "San Pedro" not Long Beach so you can forget
about the Queen Mary and its "quaint" rooms. Staying on the Queen is
nice, and it will really make you appreciate your modern ship.
There are a number of hotels in San Pedro.

Once you have your hotel, contact them because some of them have
"special rates: with the shuttle companies.
Have a great trip and do arrive at least a day early.
