I'm sure the helpful TAs will correct me if I'm wrong, but my
understanding is that they will get you to the ship...wherever it may
be. It may have already left the home port. So, if the first day is a
sea day, you'll be joining the cruise on the next day...or the first
day in port. They won't hold the ship for departure (well, maybe for
20 minutes or something..if there are several passengers on that
flight trying to get on board).

Most veteran cruisers advise flying in at least a day before the ship
departs, to add a cushion of time to whatever traffic or weather
delays might cause you to miss the ship. I'm all in favor of assuming
the risk of missing the ship by booking my own air. Not everyone is
comfy doing that...but I'd prefer to choose my airline, departure/
arrival times, etc. for myself.
