In New Jersey, birth certificates can be obtained online for only a few
dollars. The surface mail turnaround time is about 5 to 9 business
days. When I obtain one for myself, I always get a second as a backup
for just such circumstances. I keep it in a separate and safe place from
the original.
If you don't have such resources available where you are, contact your
state representatives and push for it.
