Actually, in many cases it is necessary to dial the area code. It depends
on tower locations, call routing, etc. Try dialing a local 7-digit number
and see what happens. If it doesn't go through, enter the entire 10 digits
and try again. Some services require dialing 1 before the 10-digit number
and some don't.
