In a section of Ft. Lauderdale Beach I like to call the Mars there are
some nice boutique hotels, B&B and Family Hotels. I call the section
the Mars, because all the streets end in "mar". I.E. Vistamar,
Terramar, Lunamar, etc. Town is very, very big and sprawling. Other
than the main A1A walk, you'd be interested in the Las Olas Blvd
section. The New River Riverside Walk and entertainment district.

There is a water taxi that you can use all day for a flat fee. It will
take you to Las Olas, various stops along the inland waterway, hotels
and the like. What you can't reach by water taxi, you can reach by
regular taxi.

There are great places to eat along the beach, Riverside Walk, Las
Olas, Sunset Blvd, and Plantation to name a few locations.
http://sunny.org is the official site for Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Lauderdale
Beach, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and nearby towns. You'll find an excellent
listing of chain hotels, boutique hotels, B&B and villa rentals.
Descriptions are detailed along with pictures and booking information.

I like Sheraton Yankee Trader for its proximity to the beach, quality
rooms, and close walking distance to restaurants and shops. For longer
after cruise stays, I stay at Orten Terrace a gay B&B. Right next
door is Villa Venice hosting mixed client's gay, straight, single or
married. All the varied inns in the "mars" section are a smaller scale
then the towering chain hotels to the south. They also have that 1950s
"Where The Boys Are" look about them. They all have lush grounds, and
are lit up with pastel neon lights at night. Your stay is more
individualized in these locations. There's an element of fantasy that
is lost in the larger hotels.
