When Austin went smoke free last fall, the bars were all predicting
dire consequences and the end of live music in Austin. Well, alcohol
sales are down and attendence is up. Many of the clubs have raised
their cover with no impact on the ticket sales. And the city is
saying that in the last quarter it appears, on initial analysis, that
alcohol sales are up over the previous quarter.

And in the campaign, while people were saying "this is the end of live
music in Austin", others were pointing out that the bars were in the
business of selling booze and that if polka music brought in more
drinkers, that's what they would be providing.

The bars have fought the ban in court. So far they've gotten one
minor change and have lost twice.
