Hi Sue,
The OP did mention that it was too long a day, and too far from the
ship for his comfort, so going it alone would probably not even enter
into the equation for him and his family.
That being said, we did it on our own from Cozumel, had a great time,
saved a bundle and it was a great day. We built in plenty of cushion
into our schedule to make sure we'd have time to get back to the ship
on time, and as it turned out, we could have even taken it a little
easier and still made it back well before ship's departure. Of course,
this was pre-hurricane, so we were able to walk (quickly) off the
ship, right to the ferry terminal. Now, with tendering, it wouldn't be
as easy. Once in Playa, we picked up our rental car (reserved in
advance - a brand new VW in fine shape), then headed south to the
Tulum entrance. Hired us our own private guide (retired professor, now
doing this on the side - I think we paid him $20), saw the ruins, had
a snack at the little restaurant, then drove back to Playa, dropped
the car, ferried back to Coz. It was a long day, but it saved us
hundreds over the ship's excursions (we were 4 people), we had a less
"sheeple" kind of experience, it was an adventure, and it was fun.
Going it alone isn't for everyone - that's understood. But, it can be
done, relatively easily, and if planned well (even leaving time in the
planning for flat tires, break downs, ferry delays, etc.) can be a
great way to go for those that don't always like to tour with the
masses.
