Your advice on this is applicable to just about any excursion ...
Our recent Easter Mediterranean cruise ... was affordable, complete
and totally enjoyable since it was done on our own ...
Each port city had a plethora of willing and able cab driver/guides
ready to give a party of 4 a personalized tour of whatever you
wanted ... or what they recommended ... For a small fee most every
tourist place (unless banned by law) had someone like your retired
professor available for an even more personalized service ...
You can even save more money and have extra flexibility by renting a
car and driving it yourself as you did ... Driving around most places
is pretty much like driving in America ... I say pretty much ... Rome
is even worse than New York City for example ... and London traffic
jams makes American rush hours seem like a walk in the park ...
But even there travelling from city to city is fine ...
