I noted Some interesting replies to this thread. When we were there in late
2003, it was an easy walk to the foot of Las Ramblas. But quite a long walk
all the way to the top & back! Oh, and you shouldn't miss the mediaeval
quarter, just to the east of Las Ramblas.
One annoying thing. We made the usual daytime stop there, and I went for a
long walk alone in the afternoon to look at some of the churches, etc. in
the old section. Everything was closed, even the churches, until too close
to sailing time. They take their siestas seriously there!
BTW, I would recommend to all of the posters who plan a visit soon: there
was a severe pickpocket/theft/fraud problem when we were there. Even
seasoned and cautious tourists from our ship were victimized, including
scams where tourists were stopped and robbed by crooks identifying
themselves as plainclothes police. Also the usual grab the camera and run.
We also had a significant problem on that cruise with gypsy pickpockets in
Palma de Majorca.
So be very, very careful.
And enjoy!
