You know, Sandy...snobbery goes both ways. One definition - a person
who believes himself or herself an expert or connoisseur in a given
field and is condescending toward or disdainful of those who hold
other opinions or have different tastes. Just as easily,a jeans-clad
"casual" individual could assume the personality of a snob.
Now, this issue about formality on cruises has been an ongoing one,
for as long as I've been a participant on rtc, which is about 10 years
already, give or take. Since my first cruise, dress guidelines on
cruises have definitely softened. But, my question to you, Sandy, is,
why would an individual, averse to dressing up, elect to take a
particular vacation that, traditionally, maintains a more formal
atmosphere, only to snub his fellow travelers by dressing "down"?
Who's the snob?
Really, the only time I noticed inappropriate dress in the dining room
was on a Carnival cruise, when a group of 20-somethings showed up in
their bathrobes, in preparation for that night's deck party. They
weren't admitted into the dining room. Other than that, I don't know
nor do I care what other people are wearing. I know what I'm wearing,
and I've dressed appropriately for the occasion.
Although they are few and far between these days, there are still some
restaurants that require men to wear a jacket. You will simply not be
seated if you're not dressed according to the guidelines that the
restaurant has established, regardless of how appropriately you may
feel you are dressed. Period. Those individuals who object to having
to dress up would likely opt for a different restaurant. On a much
more lenient scale, the cruise lines try to maintain a similar
environment. One can opt for the cruise, or choose a different type of
vacation.
Also, keep in mind that there are some people that specifically pick a
cruise vacation because they WANT to be a part of the fun of dressing
up, looking your best. For me, dressing up isn't about looking better
than others, it's about looking my best for me - and it's fun.
