Hi Sue
You are absolutely right!! There is a hierarchy of command on any
ship, and it all starts at the top with the Master. If he is grumpy
to his other senior officers, they will (invariably) be grumpy with
those who report to them ...and so on, VERY quickly..right on down the
chain to the various crew departments. It is amazing how just one man
and his attitude, manner, sense of humor, charm (or lack there of)
etc....can make all the difference in the lives of so many people--and
in turn for the passengers too! Find a surly, unhappy or grumpy crew
on board, and chances are that the guy at the top is causing all the
problems!! Fortunately, most companies are very sensitive to this now,
especially when you include a sentence or two about how you found
specific people or attitudes that you experienced on board. The
little bubbles or squares that you blacken on the comment card are
scanned and "averaged" for all the comment forms from any particular
voyage--and certainly they are examined too, but it is the actual
writing that you add in the tiny little box at the bottom of the form
that they cannot "average"!! Those comments get printed out at the
bottom of the cruise summary report-and believe me, they are read and
read carefully. Companies have little tolerance these days when they
can physically read if the passengers are unhappy about more or less
the same thing. The Master can earn warnings just like the crew
members--too many warnings, and he either changes his ways, or gets
booted!! There are plenty of highly experienced men just waiting to
take his place--and they know what to do to make things better for
everyone on board--at least most of them do!! Every now and then, one
gets promoted to Master, let's it go to his head, and things get
worse. Fortunately, he won't be in charge for long, or he'll be sent
to a ship where his "skills"can be carefully monitored!!
Can't wait to see your pictures--hopefully he has also dropped a few
pounds!! heheheheheheheh
Bestest,
Peg
