When I was 12 years old (1955), my (RCAF) father was transferred to France.
Back then, they sent all families to Europe by sea, so we sailed to Le Havre
from Quebec (or maybe Montreal) on the RMS Samaria, a Cunard transatlantic
ship that was commissioned in 1937 or so. It was a grand adventure for a
12-year old, as was the return trip 4 years later on the RMS Saxonia (Cunard
again, much newer), when, at the ripe old age of 16, I had my own outside
cabin!!!! I've been hooked on the idea ever since.
In 1973 my wife and I took our first vacation cruise, a 10-day Mexican
Riviera sailing on Princess's brand-new "Spirit of London," a lovely small
ship (550 oax. or so) and it instantly became our preferred method of
vacation travel.
