Price is typically determined by supply and demand.

When schools are in session, there are roughly 50-zillion (very scientific
term) families that can't go... because their kids are in school. So there
are fewer people who can go in the early and late seasons to Alaska, same as
Bermuda which has a similar season. As a result, the cruise lines have to
offer attractive fares.

Once schools let out for the summer, families are able to go, so that kicks
in a much larger population. Since the supply (number of ships) doesn't
change, but the demand does, they cruise lines can charge premium pricing.

I know you didn't ask... but depending on where you're flying from (for
example the East coast) it might be just as quick and just as cheap to fly
to London and take Hubby on a European cruise. Since I live in New Jersey,
I've done that several times instead of taking the trek to
Seattle/Vancouver. Besides, the captain on one of our ships told us that
the Norwegian Fjords were a much better cruise than a cruise to Alaska, so
we did that instead.
