REGENT SEVEN SEAS CRUISES HOSTS NASA ASTRONAUTS ABOARD SPRING 2009 WORLD
CRUISE SEGMENT
Renowned Explorers to Share their Lunar Experiences with Guests
FORT LAUDERDALE - April 1, 2008 - Regent Seven Seas Cruises, voted the "#1
Small-Ship Cruise Line" in Condé Nast Traveler's 2007 Readers' Choice Awards
poll, will offer guests the opportunity to travel with National Aeronautical
and Space Administration (NASA) astronauts Edgar Mitchell and Charles Duke,
two of the 12 individuals to have ever set foot on the moon's surface. These
genuine American heroes will be the featured guests aboard the 700-guest,
all-suite, all-balcony Seven Seas Voyager¸ which will depart April 18, 2009
for a 20-day Istanbul to Fort Lauderdale voyage, the final segment of its
116-night Grand Circumnavigation World Cruise.
"As men whose accomplishments have contributed significantly to our
collective scientific knowledge, we are honored to host Drs. Mitchell and
Duke aboard our 2009 World Cruise," said Mark Conroy, president of Regent
Seven Seas. "Because our World Cruise travelers are united by a passion for
exploration and discovery, we are pleased to present distinguished experts
from various fields of endeavor to enrich the guest experience."
"We went to the moon as technicians, we returned humanitarians," said Dr.
Mitchell (left) of the 1971 mission in which he piloted the Apollo 14 lunar
module and became the sixth man to walk on the moon. Together with Apollo 14
commander Alan Shepard, Mitchell holds the record for the longest-ever
moonwalk (9 hours and 17 minutes), and he traveled further on the moon's
surface than anyone else. As a scientist, naval officer, astronaut,
entrepreneur, author and lecturer, Dr. Mitchell's extraordinary career
exemplifies humankind's eternal quest to broaden its horizons. A member of
the Astronaut Hall of Fame, Dr. Mitchell has received numerous honors
including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Charles Duke (right) served as lunar module pilot of Apollo 16, the first
expedition to survey the moon's rugged Descartes region of lunar highlands.
In 1972, he became the 10th and youngest man ever to walk on the moon, in a
mission that set a record for the longest lunar surface stay, totaling 71
hours and 14 minutes. He has since become a sought-after motivational
speaker, and author of the book Moonwalker. Dr. Duke is a recipient of the
NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
