We've sailed on Rotterdam and Veendam - HAL. A few years ago they put new
larger dance floors in the Crow's Nest. The Ocean bar had a smaller dance
floor. Both were adequate for rythm dances that don't travel much such as
swing, cha cha and Rumba. The one in the Ocean Bar was a bit small for
smooth dances like Waltz, Fox trot and Tango.. The Crow's nest was usually
not that crowded and the floor was reasonable. We found the "Gentleman
Escorts" tended to hang around the Ocean Bar which made for a crowded
floor - and unless everyone understands line-of-dance made it a bit of an
obstacle course for smooth. The other problem is the band. On one crusie the
band in the Rotterdam played good dance music - mainly rumba. The next
cruise they had a band with a female vocalist who alternated between dance
and show tunes. One cruise they had a pianist in the Crow's nest for half
the cruise - not good for dancing - but an excellant dance band in the
smaller Ocean Bar. So it's a bit of a hit or a miss, it's not just the
floor. HAL's bands seem to favor rumba, with swing and Hustle and a little
Waltz for the remainder. They also usually have a DJ in the Crow's nest
after midnight playing requests. On second seating for dinner we would
usually go for a cocktail and dancing before dinner and then retuen after
dinner. We don't tend to be that into some of the shows like comics and
ventriloquists and prefer spend the time on dance floor. Many couples tend
to do their one "obligatory" dance and then sit it out for the night which
makes for an often empty floor.
Hope this helps
