FYI - TIP originated in England, early 1400's, it stood for "To Insure
Performance". Most, if not all, Noblemen, gave money to those serving
them, in advance to insure that they got what they wanted, when they
wanted, when traveling.
So you are correct, it is a bribe to insure you get attention and
service.
Over the insuing century, the meaning and quality of it has changed,
of course. With Great and No Expectations on either side.
