Fourty years ago Kevin and I vacationed in Jamaica and back then it was
safe and beautiful. We rented a car and spent the week driving all over
the island, but it is no longer like that. It is a very poor country
with a high crime rate and if you wander around on your own, you will be
pestered to buy drugs etc.
When we were there last we were with a group and we took a cab to
Doctors Cove beach. There was a $5 entrance fee and that was to keep it
safe. From there in a group we walked a few blocks to Margaritaville.
When we were leaving the pier we got a "safe" cab and after
Margaritaville they also got us a "safe" cab back to the port.
I would either do something like we did or take an excursion from the
ship. Many people here can give you suggestions of "safe" things to do
in Jamaica when the time is closer.
It really makes me sad when I see the poverty and crime in this
beautiful country.
