I also didn't need one until I got an extremely lucrative last minute
contract in a country that I need a passport to get into. When called I had
to tell them that day whether I would accept or not. Without the passport
in my possession I would have missed out on the money since I had less than
4 days notice over a weekend (Fri night and flew on Monday afternoon.) (The
flight was really expensive but fully paid for as was all my expenses for 6
weeks plus a really good paycheck.) That contract was worth over $75,000
for the 6 weeks. No passport, no job.
