I don't know what you mean by 'very fast'. The speed limit on motorways is
generally higher on the continent (130 kph in France and Italy). I have
driven for long distances at that speed and almost never been overtaken.
There are many speed cameras these days and I understand the penalties for
gross infringements (exceeding the limit by 50 kph or more) are particularly
savage. They can include instant confiscation of your license or even your
vehicle.
Well I know what I've seen and experienced and those are my conclusions. I'm
afraid I think (I know) that all the stories of
French/Spanish/Italian/Belgian/German drivers all driving everywhere like
lunatics at 100 mph are just traveller's tales - good for a laugh but not at
all based on fact.
