Gets even more complex! The real issue, as David Hatunen rightly notes, is
that you will rarely find two cathedrals of the same denomination in the
same diocese. Dublin's two Anglican cathedrals, as I mentioned in another
post, are a famous exception.
In Scotland, the issue is further complicated by the fact that the
established church, while non-episcopal, owns the mediaeval churches which
were formerly the cathedral, and the title is still used. So, in Glasgow,
"Glasgow Cathedral" normally refers neither to the RC or Scottish Episcopal
cathedrals, but to the Church of Scotland building which was once the
cathedral of the city's bishop.
London, spread across several boroughs, has a magnificent range of
cathedrals: two Anglican (S. Paul's and Southwark), two RC (Westminster and
Sothwark again), Orthodox of various jurisdictions (e,g. Greek in Bayswater,
Russian in South Kensington). Thirty years ago South Ken boasted two rival
Russian cathedrals, "red" in Ennismore Gardens and "white" in, very
appropriately, Emperor's gate.
