Believe it or not Crete offers a lot.
Easy to get to.
You can sample the northern beaches with tourist food.
The food is indescribably bad in general and the architecture is tourist tat
but the beaches are golden and in May rather quiet.
The road in the north goes from one end to the other and there are
marvellous Mycenian/Greek/Roman sites along it.
Hire cars are rather expensive but a practical way of moving around--the
Greek driving style is unorthodox but you will get used to it.
My advice would be do not overtake a Greek driving anything on 4 wheels with
an engine!.
The real Crete is only a mountain range away.
If you drive your car south over the 3? massive ranges you enter a whole
different Crete.
Small family restaurants with excellent food and wine--I would think in May
you will not get g.s cut for you from the restaurants vine though.
I was overwhelmed with the friendliness of a mountain family when we got
lost in the mountains one hot August-we were dehydrated but did not know
it-they spotted our predicament immediately and invited us into their
home-fed us and watered us-they would take nothing from us in return.
We went back the next day with a good bottle of wine.
My favourite village is Pitsedia in the south its a couple of miles from the
beach so- few tourists- you can stay in the village- or-the villagers have
built "tourist" accommodation-its dead boring-stay in the village enjoy the
Greek family life.
Do not miss the museum in Heraklion--its rather neglected but the Mycenian
pottery 3500 years old is beautiful-delicate-sophisticated-stunning.
Go to knossos but remember its been "renovated" I prefer walking the ruined
cities classifying the pottery shards---in the UK the shards would be in a
museum but Crete has literally tons of them lying on the hill sides.
