Thu 06/03/08 - NATO foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels to
prepare the NATO Council that will be held in Bucharest in April. The
ministers are discussing NATO's presence in Afghanistan and the
possibility of three Balkan countries joining the alliance.
NATO is looking for extra troops for Afghanistan.
The alliance also hopes that a new international co-ordinator can be
appointed.
The Afghan authorities earlier turned down Britain's Paddy Ashdown,
who served as the international community's top man in Bosnia.
Next month NATO is expected to invite Albania, Macedonia and Croatia
to join the alliance.
Greece is opposed to Macedonian membership because the country shares
the same name as one of Greece's provinces. |
