Start with the But 'n Ben in Auchmithie (a few miles north of Arbroath).
Its specialty is smoked fish, the "Arbroath smokie" was invented there.
A visit to Arbroath itself to see the smokeries would be worthwhile too
(go in the morning when they're in operation). The walk from Arbroath
to Auchmithie takes you along spectacular red sandstone cliffs.

One of the best restaurants in Glasgow, the Ubiquitous Chip, was badly
fire-damaged recently. Better check if they're back in operation.

Also in Glasgow, try Balbir's (superb newish Indian restaurant, in
Church Street near Kelvinhall tube station) and the big Chinese place
in Sauchiehall Street on the north side near the CCA (glaringly
modern industrial-looking interior and most of the menus in Chinese -
it helps to go with a Chinese-speaking person).

In Edinburgh, try Laraz, the Kurdish restaurant on the corner of Home
Street and Lochrin Place, Tollcross. "9 Cellars", the Indian restaurant
in York Place near the bus station, looks amazing but I haven't been
there yet.
