Trier is interesting given its age. It has Roman ruins including a
Roman gate and baths that you can tour. It also has medievel and
gothic structures that luckily survived the bombings of WW II.

From Trier you can tour the Rhine River valley. Kind of a tourist trap
atmosphere in most of the towns and villages, but still a beautiful
drive with river island castles and other ruins. Not to be missed is a
drive down into the valley on one of the steep, serpentine, farm roads
that lead up to higher ground.
