Might be, I've travelled at most in a company of 3 adults, and I always
travel by train because I do not drive. Note however that some countries
offer rail discounts for large family parties. Suggest you post on
misc.transport.rail.europe. People there will know. Maybe with children
and lot of luggage a van will give you more flexibility.

Cannot comment on the type of pass you mention. I travelled however on
national/local passes like Britrail Pass, Benelux Tourrail, Scanrail,
DB Tourenkarten, and swiss and austrian passes, and always found them
worth the freedom to catch any train without queueing up for tickets
(of course I did not consider driving since I do not drive)
Concerning sleepers their price is fully compatible with typical hotel
prices (in cities, I cannot take advantage of rural accomodations since
I do not drive). Note a T3+T2 compartments require 2nd class tickets ...
in general a compartment costs the same whether it is occupied by 1-2-3
people, plus the cost of the tickets. To be more precise a single,
double or T3 have one cost, and a special single or T2 a slightly
reduced cost. Single, double and special require 1st class, T2 and T3
2nd class. But note that T2/special will be in a different car w.r.t
T3/double/single.

I do not know who gave you this crazy idea of "changing trains in the
middle of the night". Nobody does that !
Concerning planning the routes with a timetable, it's part of the fun.
Or at least it was in the time of printed (not online) timetables.
