You were concerned about distance ...
How long is the trip ?
Are you looking for "adult things" to do too? or mainly for kids ?

The Zoo:

not sure if the bears are still out, or if now they are inside. "Knute"
was scaring little kids lately with his antics:

( the zoo is across the street from a "seedy part of town" next to the
train station - strippers etc so depending on the kid's ages just don't
"hang around the bahnhaus" otherwise the 13 yr olds would be more
interested in THAT than the Zoo. BUT it is a world-class zoo so do not
skip it - just stay on the Zoo side of the street while approaching it. )
West Berlin - on a rainy day I like visitng KaDeWe (store) to check out
"what's new there".
For Berlin - look for my postings from the past

For a LOT of major cities - "things to do", check this out:

select your city from the drop-down on the right

Here's Berlin's - it's old but still covers "the big things to see/do"

I liked the ancient walls, altars etc ( massive) here:

If you need more info, I've got plenty of links but I think that's enough

Munich/ Bavaria area:

http://www.hemispheresmagazine.com/3pd/three/2006/munich/

lots of castles as day trips...
Hohenschwangau , Neuschwanstein and others
Zugspitze on a clear day
http://www.zugspitze.de/main_en.php
For the adults: Dachau Concentration Camp
http://www.kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de/index-e.html

I have this as a bookmark for the area:

Lots of ideas ,so you can browse from there.

The kids ( how old) will have a fun time on the wall surrounding
Rothenburg : good walking town - very "touristy" - lots of shops/places to
buy souvenirs etc , but good place for lunch. Climb the church tower for a
"view of the town" for a few bucks.
