Dear Irish Tourism Office
I have been trying in vain to verify if a letter I received in the
mail is a legitimate
speeding ticket or a scam by some criminals. Nobody can help me make
the determination
which it is.
I was in Ireland on Feb. 23 this year. I did rent a car, a Fiat Punta
with a black
grill. I have what is supposedly a speeding ticket received in the
mail from (?) showing
a license plate number I do not recognize (I would not recognize the
rental car's plate
anyway) and a chrome grill alledging speeding 15 KM over the limit.
The phone number in Ireland to the police goes to an answering machine
when I've called
it several times. They do not return a call to me when I've left
messages.
The email address given on this alledged ticket does not reply. If
this really was from
a legitimate police department, wouldn't they respond to email
inquiries?
I've called Irish embassies, Irish tourism offices, spoken to many
people who don't know
/ don't care, and the supposed police department won't respond.
Yet the letter asks me to send 80 euros to an address in Ireland with
the check made out
to "member in charge". My bank will not make out a check in euros.
They also ask for a
credit card number, but if they will not respond to my inquiries of
legitimacy, would you
give out a credit card number to some place overseas you have no idea
who it might be and
be able to sleep at night?
I have easily wasted more than 80 euros trying to chase this thing
down and see if its
really the police or some criminal gang who does identitiy theft or
credit card fraud.
The supposed police don't respond. Why should I worry. If this is
how tourists are
treated in Ireland why would I ever want to go back?
I am through with worrying about this and will stop my trying to
verify if the police are
real and give up. No payment. I'm done. if the police won't respond
I can only assume
it is a gang of criminals who is trying to steal money from me.
Good by and good riddance.
