Depends on where you go. In Rhodes I found them rather too good -
you really knew you were in a culture heavily shaped to meet the
requirements of the British tourist. In Thessaloniki nobody's
going to understand a word outside the shops in the city centre.
The brother of a colleague of mine toured Greece on a motorbike
after graduating with a classics degree but knowing no modern
Greek. He ran out of petrol on a remote mountain road and had to
ask "do you have any food for my iron horse?" in ancient Greek,
but it worked.
