My first choice of accommodation in that area would be Les Trois Rois
(http://www.lestroisrois.com/) in the heart of Basle. The city itself
is worth certainly mote than a look. Together with a 11 year old, the
Tinguely museum (http://www.tinguely.ch/) could be an interesting
approach to art.

Also interesting: The Schlumpf automobile collection at Mulhouse
(http://www.collection-schlumpf.com/). I've been there many years ago
when there was actually no museum but just some halls filled with
unique cars. It looks like they've done a lot in the meantime.

Well - If you're from or interested in the amusement industry/park
business, Europa Park is certainly worth a visit. The Mack family did
a tremendous job during the last 30 years and it's one of the best
managed places of it's kind in Europe, maybe worldwide.

BTW: Staying at one of the Hotels in the park
(http://resort.europapark.de/index.php?lang=en) might also be an
option. I stayed at the El Andaluz and Castillo Alccazar earlier and
was quite happy with both (actually learned a lot there).
