That's true, but even for occasional use you run into problems. For
example, last summer we went to Sardinia. Firstly, detailed maps of
Sardinia were not available locally here, and not apparent in Sardinia
[1]. No doubt they could be bought, if I'd been willing to spend my
holiday time traipsing round the larger cities. Secondly, as it turned
out, we needed the GPS when we got lost in torrential rain in Sassari -
a town we'd never intended to visit. What should we have done? - bought
detailed maps of the whole of northern Sardinia just-in-case?

Agreed. Plus - I like owning maps!!
