Yeah, we don't really notice it. Seems like the friendly thing to do.

I made the grand blunder myself, traveling across Russia, smiling at
people. Evidently, it's perfectly acceptable to be drunk and shabby at
10am, provided you look serious doing it, but smiling is something
culturally reserved for the insane. Seems a bit odd.
