Subject: Smokers are now pariahs in Italy Posted on: Sun, 19 Nov 2006 23:18:16 +0100

A few days on the state TV news, I saw that some companies are
proposing to dock smokers 10 minutes for each cigarette break.
Supposedly this is because nonsmoking employees have been complaining
that they are working more than their smoking colleagues and should be
paid more. The unions objected to the proposal.

I don't know how much substance there is to the report, but I do sense
a certain hostility to smokers in Italy these days. I've also seen
reports that a substantial percentage of smokers have quit.
