No airline has ever asked me for it before check-in that I recall.
Check-in is normally on name. They might well type it in when you hand
it over at check-in, of course; I never paid that much attention then.
Mind you, it's a common misconception. I have a friend who has two
passports (a normal one and a diplomatic one) and got a bit panicky
before check-in when he said he couldn't remember which one he'd used
for booking an easyJet flight. He was surprised (and visibly relieved)
when I told him it was only on name - and he flies all the time (though
I think he tends to get things booked for him, while as I work for a
small company I have to do my own...)
As to the OP, I doubt it is for nefarious purposes. If you're really
suspicious, phone them or e-mail back and ask why they need it ahead of
time - but if you *really* don't trust the hotel perhaps you should be
asking yourself if you've chosen the right one. After all, you've
probably given them (or the booking agent) a credit card number...
